Authors Are Rockstars! Ft. Melissa de la Cruz

Posted August 27, 2013 by Stephanie in / 0 Comments

Hey everyone! Welcome to my post for the Authors Are Rockstars Event! My rockstar of an author is… Melissa de la Cruz!!!

Here’s why I think she is a rockstar: 2 words… Blue Bloods! How many of you have read Blue Bloods? I just got done reading the first book and let me tell you I loved it! Melissa knows how to write and write well! I couldn’t put it down! And, come on, we all know I have a weakness for vampires! I’m super excited to jump into the rest of the series and check out every other book of hers. I think that if an author can make their fans keep wanting more, they are a rockstar!

So, without further ado, here is a Q&A with Melissa de la Cruz! Enjoy and leave some comment love!!

You just recently finished your Blue Bloods Series with GATES OF PARADISE. Was ending such an amazing series bittersweet? It was probably hard to let go of such awesome characters like Jack, Schuyler, Mimi, Bliss, and Kingsley.
It was almost traumatic, the only thing that saved me is that while I knew this part of the story was ending, I was also planning to write the spinoff, and I comforted myself with the thought that I wasn’t really letting go of my characters. They’re just too much fun to write!
How exciting is it to see the stills from the set of WITCHES OF EAST END? Is Lifetime TV doing an awesome job with turning the book into a TV series? What did you think of the casting for the show?
Lifetime and Fox 21 is doing an AMAZING job with the TV show. I could not be happier, truly. It’s a dream come true, and it’s surreal. Everyone who works on the show is lovely and welcoming and so excited and they love the characters as much as I do. I burst into tears when I read Maggie’s script, she brought the girls to life in a new medium. I was really touched by how true to the book it was. Of course every interpretation makes changes, and I’m fine with it. As David Sedaris said “You give permission and you let go.” I’m looking forward to being the show’s number one fan. The casting is just spot-on, Julia, Jenna and Rachel ARE Joanna, Freya and Ingrid. And have you guys seen Daniel di Tomasso who plays Killian? I mean, can you even?? It’s a thrilling adventure, and I’m just grateful to have this experience.

On to the new stuff. This is for you and Michael to answer. How did you come about the idea for FROZEN and have you two always wanted to co-author a book series together?
We’ve been working together since Blue Bloods in 2003. I sort of roped him in, and even though it’s my name on Blue Bloods and Witches of East End, Mike’s been a collaborator for a long time. He came up with the SIlver Bloods and the Michael/Gabrielle storyline, and in Witches, he mainly works on Joanna’s storylines. We’ve been working on Frozen for about five years, we wanted to do a big post-apocalyptic dragon epic, and this is a shared vision. The idea came from going to Las Vegas a lot and wondering what Vegas would be like at the end of the world. We decided it probably wouldn’t be too different! Just covered  in snow. 🙂 We work on a lot of books together, Mike is working on one now which just has his name on it but I worked on it too.

How many books will there be in the FROZEN series?
Right now three, but it’s a big world and we imagine doing other books set in the world, with different characters and in different timelines maybe.

Are there any contemporary books in our future from you?
Yes I am actually working on a contemporary romance. It’s nice to go back to my roots and I’m really enjoying it as well.

What is your favorite thing about travelling to book conferences, signings, and festivals?
Probably the fact that I get to READ on the plane. Uninterrupted reading time! It is also a joy to meet my readers. I have the best fans – really sweet and so glamorous! I’m always blown away by how stylish you guys are. I love it!!
–Melissa de la Cruz

Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions Melissa and Michael!

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

 My Thoughts:
To say that I liked this book would be an understatement. I loved this book. I mean come on, of course I did. It was about a kickass redhead. Who wouldn’t love that? Finally, a book that doesn’t have a redhead be the villain!
At first, I was not sure how well this was going to work out. A series where each book is based on different fairytales yet the same characters are within them. However, Marissa Meyer made it work and she kicked ass doing it. I was blown away with how well it all ties in together and still works being a different fairytale. Major props to Marissa for that!
Also, major props to Marissa for hooking me with Thorne. Oh, Captain Carswell Thorne, how I love you so very much. Definitely makes my list of book boyfriends for sure! He is so witty, I just love it! Kai didn’t do it for me in this book. Did he have other options, not many. However, he kind of just pussied out. Sorry for my language but I got really frustrated with Kai and not to mention he is a MORON! Wolf, I love. Not as much as Thorne. And I wasn’t sure if I liked Wolf at first, and then he completed was off my radar, but then at the end he made it up to me and to Scarlet and now I have a soft spot for him in my bookish heart.
I really enjoyed Scarlet as a character. She’s a stubborn redhead, who carries a gun, flies a ship and is simply…kickass. If she were a real person, my boyfriend would be in love with her! I loved her even more than I loved Cinder.
IKO! She’s back and boy am I glad! She is one of my all-time FAVORITE supporting characters EVER! In this book she is in the form of a spaceship but hey, at least she’s back!
I seriously cannot wait until I can get my hands on a copy of Cress, however, in 2015 when Winter comes out, I will probably cry, because the series will be over. I hate it when my favorite things come to an end. But Marissa Meyer is definitely on my automatic buy anything list :]
Memorable Quotes:

It seems that you’ve stumbled into the wrong jail cell. Do you need directions to get back to yours?

Her irritation made her prettier, and Thorne cupped his chin, studying her. He’d never met a cyborg before, much less flirted with one, but there was a first time for everything.

His heartbeat quickened. A tingle filled his brain and raced down his nerves. She was…beautiful. No, divine. No, perfect.

“Oh, I’m sure they do,” Scarlet said, beaming with fake encouragement. She shut the door before muttering, “What farm animals don’t love a wolf?”

But I was worried you might draw that fun on him, and such a scene may not have helped your case. As far as not being crazy, that is.
