What book inspired this discussion? City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. This will be a discussion of what I do about hyped up books. What hyped books I have read, what hyped books I’m currently reading, what books I want to read, and what books I probably just won’t read.
The HypeThere are times where I haven’t read books because there is so much hyper about them that I’m afraid that my expectations are too high and what if I don’t like the book?! Then there are books that I read BECAUSE of the hype. The Hype can be good or it can be bad. In this discussion I will go about showing you what it has done to me and how it affects my reading.
Books I’ve Read:
Divergent by Veronica Roth
I have finally read the entire trilogy. And I started Divergent because everyone was talking about it and everyone was saying how good it was and I wanted to know what it was all about. So I read the first one and devoured it. Took me a while to read Insurgent but once I started I also devoured it. Allegiant took me FOREVER to get to. I was afraid of it. I already knew how it was going to end. And I have this things with series that I’m afraid for them to end because I love them so much. Well, I finally got through the third one and it was…okay. But this was a series I read because of the hype.
Throne of Glass & A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
I read Throne of Glass because Bookish Lifestyle was doing a read along for it back in January. It was a totally hyped up series and I almost didn’t read it because of that. But I am so glad I did. I still have to read books 2 and 3 before 4 comes out. But I’m so glad that I started it! ACOTAR I simply just wanted to read regardless of the hype surrounding it. It sounded fantastic, plus I’m a HUGE fan of Beauty and the Beast. (By the way, I’m doing a giveaway for a hardcover copy of ACOTAR. GO ENTER! 🙂
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
I have to admit that this is one of the books that got me back into reading. I’m not really sure if I read it when it was hyped up or before. Because I can’t remember, it was that long ago. But I know it was before the movie came out. I will always love that Twilight got me BACK into reading and at the time I thought it was amazing. But looking back, it sucked. Sparkly vampires? Really?!
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
I have yet to read the conclusion to this series. But I am SO glad that I read the first 2 books. I knew it was hyped. Everyone was talking about it and it actually just made me want to read it even more. I just wish it didn’t take me SO long to actually getting around to it!
Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
I totally read this because of the hype. I was super curious about it and yes, I enjoyed it. Not going to lie. I also went to go see the movie and I think the movie was much better. Oh well, what ya gonna do about it?
Hyped Books I’m Currently Reading:
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
I am currently reading this (might even be done with it by the time this posts). This is one book I almost DIDN’T read because of the hype. I think it was a mixture of the hype plus all the people saying bad things about it/bad things about HOW many books in this world there are. But I recently watched the movie (and enjoyed it a lot!) plus the TV show is coming out and it’s looking good, plus I like TV shows more than movies. So, I decided to read it!
Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard
I’m currently part way through this book and I’m liking it but I haven’t been able to finish it yet because I’ve been SO busy with work and other books that I accepted FOR a review. But I know this book is hyped (as is Truthwitch, and I already pre-ordered that) but I really want to see how this is. The only thing that worries me is the whole zombie issue. I like watching zombies, but I’m not big on the reading about them. So, hopefully, I will still like this one!
Hyped Books I Want To Read:
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
I read the first one and for some reason never read the rest of the series. I want to. I just know that is going to be a huge commitment. But the good news is, I have almost all of the books. 🙂
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
This book was probably my MOST anticipated book for 2015. And for some reason I haven’t read it yet. I had an extra copy that I gave to one of my friends and she devoured it a few days after I gave it to her. So, why haven’t I read it yet? I will soon, I promise!
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
My brother bought this book for me for Christmas a few years ago. I want to read it. But for some reason it keeps getting pushed back on my list.
Hyped Books I Probably Will Never Touch:
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
I just don’t see what everyone else sees when it comes to John Green…
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
I love the movie, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to read the book.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Again, I love the movies and I own all the books. But I don’t know if I will ever get around to reading them.
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
For some reason, it just doesn’t call to me. I want to watch the movies. But the books, not so much.
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
I want to watch the show. But dear lord, the books are SO intimidating! I don’t know if I could handle them.
So let’s talk!
How do you feel about the Hype? Does it make you not read books? Does it make you WAIT on reading books? Or does it not affect you at all? Are there books that I’m missing that are HYPED?
