Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins, because more is buried there than treasure.
A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.
While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe.

While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).

I liked this book, but I didn’t love it as much as I loved Compulsion. There were a few things that irked me about this book, but for the majority of it, I loved it and cannot wait until the third one is out (which does have a title!!! Illusion). I think Martina Boone is a great writer and I cannot wait to see more from her.
With this second book, Barrie is dealing with the loss of Mark. And it is so sad to see her going through this, but it’s a part of life. But while she is dealing with her grief she is also dealing with finding out even more with her family and the Heirs of Watson Island. I loved the gripping Gothic, paranormal mystery that Martina creates. 🙂
So, I still really love Barrie and Eight, however, there were some things that irked me about their relationship. One, they fought a lot. And I mean, a lot. And in between the fighting there was lots of kissing. But it was back and forth and it just got a bit irritating. But I still love them together and I’m hoping that the third book will show their relationship better than this book did.
As much as I love Barrie and how independent she is. I think she was too independent in this one. There were times where I felt the need to smack her and give her some common sense, because I’m sorry, Eight is there for you to confide in and to help you out, Barrie!
Overall, I think that this was a great addition to Compulsion and I cannot wait for Illusion. I love the story that Martina has created and is continuing to create and I cannot wait to find out how this story concludes within Illusion! If you’re into Southern Gothics or Paranormal Mysteries, or Southern Romance, you need to check this series out! You won’t be disappointed! 🙂

Let’s talk about it!
