Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

“Well, I’m not kissing the mundane,” said Jace. “I’d rather stay down here and rot.”

“That does it,” said Jace. “I’m going to get you a dictionary for Christmas this year.”
“Why” Isabelle said.
“So you can look up ‘fun.’ I’m not sure you know what it means.”

No, I’m just a very naughty boy. I do all sorts of bad things. I kick kittens. I make rude gestures at nuns.

I’ve heard the word ‘fear.’ I simply choose to believe it doesn’t apply to me.

As long as there was coffee in the world, how bad could things be?

This is going to be a mini review since I do not want to give away a whole lot for whomever hasn’t read this series and hasn’t read the first book. I figure this is what I will do for sequels. If it is a sequel, I’ll just do a mini review of it. Except for when the books are completely different (i.e. different characters).

Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this second one. I think I may have liked the story more so than the first one? I think I gave the first one 5 stars (I can’t remember) and I know I’m only giving this one 4 stars, but I really think I enjoyed this one more. There was a lot more action. And you didn’t have to go through all the world building from the first book. You already knew about the world and you got to experience more, like The Seelie Court (where the faeries live).

I really hate the tension between Clary and Jace. 1. I love them together. 2. I know they aren’t related. 3. Just let me have their romance already! This is probably why the book is a 4 star for me. I really enjoyed Simon after he was turned in this book. And my favorite character is still Izzy. She is kick ass <3

Let’s talk about it!
Did you read City of Ashes? Or any other of Cassie’s books? What did you think of them? Leave your thoughts in the comments! 🙂
