Colie expects the worst when she's sent to spend the summer with her eccentric aunt Mira while her mother, queen of the television infomercial, tours Europe. Always an outcast -- first for being fat and then for being "easy" -- Colie has no friends at home and doesn't expect to find any in Colby, North Carolina.
But then she lands a job at the Last Chance Cafe and meets fellow waitresses Morgan and Isabel, best friends with a loving yet volatile relationship. Wacky yet wise, Morgan and Isabel help Colie see herself in a new way and realize the potential that has been there all along.

I will be posting my review along with my answers for the questions below later this week, so be on the lookout! (I will try at least, the review may come next week since I’m getting induced tomorrow morning)

My Thoughts/Answers for Read Along

My overall view of That Summer was… “it’s okay.” It is by far not my favorite book of Sarah Dessen’s. But I did appreciate it and just because it was okay doesn’t mean I won’t be reading all of her books! I didn’t really connect a whole lot with Haven. Maybe it was because she was 15. Or maybe it was because she just wasn’t really willing to see what was actually going on with her life. What I did connect with was the fact that her parents got divorced and her dad got remarried and started a whole new life. Because of this, she goes through a lot of change in a short amount of time. And I completely understand that. When I was 7, my parents got divorced and then when I was 8 my dad got remarried (to the woman he cheated on my mom with). And when she was trying to deal with that, I understood where she was coming from.

What I didn’t really care for was how Haven and her sister, Ashley treated each other. I mean I get that they were both going through some stuff. But, I still think they could have treated each other a lot better. And honestly, that’s the main reason why I’m only giving this one 3 stars… Otherwise it’d probably be a 3.5 to 4 star book for me. It wasn’t until the very end that Haven and Ashley started really acting like sisters and treating each other like the friends they should.

All-in-all, I enjoyed reading Sarah Dessen’s debut novel and I appreciate it for what it is considering it came out in 1996. And even though it came out in 1996, it was still readable. And I loved that timeless feeling it gave me.
