My Thoughts/Answers for Read Along

My overall view of That Summer was… “it’s okay.” It is by far not my favorite book of Sarah Dessen’s. But I did appreciate it and just because it was okay doesn’t mean I won’t be reading all of her books! I didn’t really connect a whole lot with Haven. Maybe it was because she was 15. Or maybe it was because she just wasn’t really willing to see what was actually going on with her life. What I did connect with was the fact that her parents got divorced and her dad got remarried and started a whole new life. Because of this, she goes through a lot of change in a short amount of time. And I completely understand that. When I was 7, my parents got divorced and then when I was 8 my dad got remarried (to the woman he cheated on my mom with). And when she was trying to deal with that, I understood where she was coming from.

What I didn’t really care for was how Haven and her sister, Ashley treated each other. I mean I get that they were both going through some stuff. But, I still think they could have treated each other a lot better. And honestly, that’s the main reason why I’m only giving this one 3 stars… Otherwise it’d probably be a 3.5 to 4 star book for me. It wasn’t until the very end that Haven and Ashley started really acting like sisters and treating each other like the friends they should.

All-in-all, I enjoyed reading Sarah Dessen’s debut novel and I appreciate it for what it is considering it came out in 1996. And even though it came out in 1996, it was still readable. And I loved that timeless feeling it gave me.

My Thoughts So for the most part I liked this book. I think my main issue with this was just the fact that I have been in such a book slumpy mood that it’s put a damper on not only the amount of books I’ve been reading but whether or not I enjoy them. It […]

My Thoughts Well my book nerds, I don’t quite know what to think. Overall, this novel was certainly not what I was expecting. I’m giving it a solid three stars because there was aspects of this story that I enjoyed – the plot was unique, the Asian influence really interesting – but it fell short […]
