Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

“The problem with wanting,” he whispered, his mouth trailing along my jaw until it hovered over my lips, “is that it makes us weak.”

“I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise.”

“What are you smiling at?” I whirled, peering into the gloom. The Darkling’s voice seemed to float out of the shadows. He walked down to the stream, crouching on the bank to splash water on his face and through his dark hair. “Well?” he asked, looking up at me. “Myself,” I admitted. “Are you that funny?” “I’m hilarious.”

“I’ve been waiting for you a long time, Alina” he said. “You and I are going to change the world.”

“I’m not used to people trying to kill me.” “Really? I hardly notice anymore.”

This book is one book I cannot believe I waited so long to read! That’s how I’ve felt about a few books I’ve read recently. However, even though I waited so long to read it, I am glad that all three of the books are out so I can binge them when I buy them and I don’t have to wait another year until the next installment releases.

This is a fantasy but I don’t think that it’s too much fantasy. So, if you’re not a fantasy fan, I think you’d still be able to get through Shadow and Bone quite easily. If you, however, are not a paranormal fan or a fantasy fan. You probably won’t like this. Because there is magic within this book.

This book follows Alina Starkov and her journey of her discovery that she is a Grisha. The setting, the world building, the romance, the villains, the danger, the friends she makes, the people she loses are all within this book and it is spectacular. Alina is strong. She is smart. She sacrifices. She loves.

The men in Alina’s life…The Darkling and Mal. The Darkling is well, dark and brooding. Mal is sweet. I’m not sure which one I’m wanting to root for for Alina’s sake. Throughout the the first 90% I was all Team Darkling. Then he kind of went too dark. And Mal took the reins and he sacrificed himself and it was endearing. I do, however, have hope that the Darkling can prove himself worthy again if not for Alina but for me. 🙂

All-in-all, this was a great ride. I had a lot of fun reading it and I cannot wait to read the rest of this trilogy. If you’re a fan of fantasy and/or paranormal, definitely check this book out. It’s worth it to at least try it. And if it’s out of your comfort zone? What’s the worst that can come out of at least trying the first 5 chapters? Who knows, you may like it. 🙂

Let’s talk about it. Did you read Shadow and Bone? What did you think of it and of The Darkling? Or do you want to read this book? Leave your thoughts in the comments! 🙂
