My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.
All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.
Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? It's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House... before its skeletons come back to haunt me.

Simon: Anyone ever tell you your sense of timing really sucks? Derek: That’s why I don’t play the drums.

“I’m behind you.” I spun to see Derek. “I can’t win,” he said. “You’re as skittish as a kitten.”

“Oh, for God’s sake. Save your piss. Don’t save your piss. It’s all the same to me.”

He pivoted, gaze following me as I crossed to the shower and turned on the cold water, so it would drown out our conversation without steaming up the room. “Great,” he muttered. “Now they’re going to think we’re showering together. Maybe we can just tell them we were washing off the crawl space dirt and trying to conserve water.”

“Rae burned me. She has matches or something. Look, look…” Tori pulled down the collar of her T-shirt. “Leave your clothes on, Tori,” Simon said, raising his hands to his eyes. “Please.”

I was a little hesitant to start The Summoning. I’m not going to lie. It took me a couple weeks just to pick it up after it was chosen as the second reader’s choice read. Why? Because it’s about a 15-16 year old girl. Most of the young adult books I’ve been reading lately the main character has been at least 17 years old. The first couple chapters we even learn that she just got her period for the first time ever. So, I was a little skeptical.

But, I am glad that I kept up with it. Because I ended up really enjoying The Summoning. I am happy to say that there were a couple of things that surprised me towards the ending. [Spoilerish: Don’t read this part unless you’ve read the book] Like a werewolf being in it. I wasn’t expecting that. I wasn’t sure what Derek was but I wasn’t expecting anything to do with werewolves or vampires. I was expecting ghosts, witches, that sort of thing. Also, Chloe’s Aunt Lauren. I was really liking her. And then at the ending she just ripped my heart out. And I was so disappointed with Lauren. Like how could you do that to your own niece? And why? Like, I couldn’t imagine doing what Lauren did! But I digress. I just had to vent for a second.

Anyways, I ended up really liking Chloe and the rest of the gang at Lyle House. Chloe was mature (for her age) and had a great head on her shoulders. She was also smart (not like Derek smart, but smart nonetheless). I really enjoyed the banter between Chloe and Derek. And I liked the friendship between Chloe and Simon. I think I liked Rae the most because she’s just so…lively.

One thing that I wish there was more of were the ghosts. The book starts up with ghosts, but after the beginning, there’s only a few instances later. And I wish there were more. Especially at a group home. You’d expect more at those kinds of places. But for that and for that ending (because the ending really pissed me off) is why it’s only a 3.5-4 star book for me. I do plan on continuing the story because I want to know what happens next. But I’m hoping for better endings. 🙂

Let’s talk about it. Did you read The Summoning? Or any other of Kelley’s books? What did you think of them? Leave your thoughts in the comments! 🙂
