Cecelia Price killed her brother. At least, that’s what the police and the district attorney are saying. And although Cecelia is now locked up and forced into treatment, she knows the real story is much more complicated.
Cyrus wasn’t always the drug-addled monster he’d become. He was a successful athlete, but when an injury forced him off the soccer field and onto pain medication, his life became a blur of anger, addiction, and violence. All CeCe could do was stand by and watch, until she realized one effective way to take away her brother’s drugs while earning the money she needed for college: selling the pills.
Soon, CeCe becomes part drug dealer, part honor student. But even when all she wants is to make things right, she learns that sometimes the best intentions lead to the worst possible outcome.
Thicker than Water is an unforgettable dark, harrowing look into the disturbing truth of drug addiction and the desperate love of a sister watching her brother deteriorate before her eyes.

This book is simply perfection! Just from the synopsis alone, I was super intrigued with this story. I’ve been wanting more books that deal with tough issues (in fact I wrote a post or two talking about this) and as soon as I read that synopsis, I was sold! Kelly Fiore’s writing style is gorgeous and it just kept me reading more. I read this in about 2 sittings because I got distracted by work, but if that wasn’t the case, it would have been a 1 sitting read for me.
The ones who are quiet fall into two categories–introspective and brooding. I like to brood. It gives me an excuse to glower at people and pretend to be surly when I’m actually just counting the pinholes in the ceiling panels in an effort to make the time pass more quickly.
Cecelia, CeCe, is quite the character. I really loved her. I think Fiore did a fantastic job and nailing her character arc. And the way that Fiore did this was by alternating with the present day CeCe and the CeCe in the past prior to her brother, Cyrus’ death. I think seeing this before and after really helps the reader connect on a more realistic level with CeCe.
Not to mention all the stuff that goes on in this gritty, harrowing novel. There is death, rehab, drug addiction, and the reality of paying for college. This novel is a great addition to the Young Adult genre and I think anyone who wants a realistic heart-wrenching tale that is so memorable, should definitely pick up Thicker Than Water.
Kelly Fiore will be on my list of authors that I cannot wait to see their sophomore novels!
