Part epic fantasy, part twisted fairy tale, this dazzling saga will have readers shivering as Dinahs furious nature sweeps Wonderland up in the maelstrom of her wrath.
Familiar characters such as Cheshire, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter make their appearance, enchanting readers with this new, dark take on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

My Thoughts

For starters, even though I am obsessed with Alice in Wonderland…I have never read Lewis Carroll’s version. So, I cannot tell you how this compares to the original because I have only seen the Disney movies revolving around Wonderland. (I know, what is wrong with me? My blog is named after it for crying out loud! Believe me, I know!) Anywho, I went in blind on this book. All I knew was that it was a retelling of Alice in Wonderland and it has a really pretty cover. What came out of me reading this? …Well… It has potential. I didn’t hate it. But I didn’t love it. I guess I liked it?

The writing is perfectly fine. It’s a strange world so it’s a little hard to grasp at first. And I’m not going to lie, the first half of this book is pretty boring. The characters are interesting. I think my favorite characters were Cheshire and Harris. Dinah (the MC), I don’t know. I liked her but then there were a lot of times where I didn’t like her. Vittoire (Dinah’s new stepsister) I couldn’t trust. And Dinah’s father, the King of Hearts/Wonderland, I hated him! 🙂

The story itself was kind of boring at the beginning, but I will continue on with the series because I think it has potential. I’m intrigued as to see where this is going. And I’m intrigued to see if the second book does any better. I hope so. As for Colleen Oakes’ work, I will definitely be looking at some of her other stuff, because she is a good writer.

Would I recommend this? Well, yes and no. Yes, if you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland themed books/stuff. No, if you don’t want to get through a boring beginning to get to an okay ending to hopefully waiting for a good sequel. Yes, if you like Colleen Oakes. No, if you don’t like hot and cold main characters. See, what I mean? It’s hard to pinpoint. But I do say that it has potential. So, I’m glad I gave it a shot and I’m definitely going to be giving the second book a shot when it comes out.

  1. Hmmm. that’s quite the mix. I love Alice in Wonderland, but I also prefer good writing. I think I’ll still give this a shot only because this has been on my TBR list since I first heard about it! Thanks for sharing!

Great review! It’s been crazy the amount of retellings that have been published in the last couple of years especially in the YA genre and while I am a fan of them sometime I wonder if enough is enough. This one howver had me very intrigued from the get go I mean look at that cover it’s gorgeous and the synopsis had me itching for more but I’m disappointed to hear that it’s a bit of a let down. I cannot stand books with slow, boring beginnings and usually DNF them so now I’m so sure if I should read this or not….

I know I’m probably one of the last to the party but I haven’t read Alice in WOnderland before but this book sounded phenomenal by the blurb so it’s disappointing to hear it had a slow start (something I absolutely hate in a book). Who know I might read this one when I’m in the mood. Great review!
