This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.
This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
Holy shit was this book good! No, scratch that, it was great! I was immersed within this story and the layout was so beautiful. I listened to the majority of it with the audiobook, which is fantastic and I definitely recommend giving the audiobook a try! But even after listening to it, I went back to the physical book and went through it to look at the gorgeous layout and images that were within it. And seriously, this is one of my all-time favorite books! And I am so unbelievably happy that I stood in the 2.5 hour line for an ARC of Gemina at BEA this past May, because I will definitely be diving into Gemina this August for ARC August!
At first, I was a little worried that I wouldn’t get to love the characters since it was written as looking through a file. But even though you were reading a file, I still loved the characters! I was so happy that I loved the characters and you were still able to get the characterization and the plot while reading in this type of format. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff really made the epistolaric novel so unique and I think it breathed new life into the epistolary format, because, I personally love reading epistolary novels. I think they are wonderful!
This book keeps you on your toes! I felt like I was right there with Kady and Ezra and the feelings that this book takes you through, holy shit! Like, there was a time within this book that I had tears in my eyes (if you’ve read it, I’m sure you know exactly what part I’m talking about!). There were times within this book that I was laughing uncontrollably. And then there were the times were I was just so mindfucked. This is truly a spectacular book! If you have not read this yet, you need to get on this bandwagon! Because with all honesty, this book was BEYOND BRILLIANT!!!!
