A Deep Dive Into R.S. Grey

Posted December 6, 2019 by Stephanie in Discussion, Spotlight / 0 Comments

Guys, this past November was not only a great writing month for me, but it was also a great reading month. I read a total of 8 books, which is not really a whole lot in the scheme of things but I read 8 books during the month of NaNoWriMo. And what do they all have in common? All 8 books were written by R.S. Grey.

R.S. Grey is an author I first discovered in February earlier this year. I read her book Not So Nice Guy and I really enjoyed it. So much that I put quite a few of her books on my TBR. Well my friends, I’m happy to say that she is now an author that I want to read her books the second they become available. Her writing is engaging and funny and easy to delve into the world she creates. It was seriously so easy to binge read her books because she just captures you. Either from a funny moment or something serious happening. Her books definitely remind me of watching a romantic comedy movie.

I’ve also listened to the audiobooks during my driving commutes and the narrators do a great job as well. As soon as I read two of her books in November, I quickly knew that I was diving deep into the world of R.S. Grey and I want all of you to join me! A lot of the settings take place in a small town in Texas or the main characters are from there, etc. The main characters are relatable and funny and unique in their own ways. And R.S. Grey is not afraid to knock her characters down and I really liked how I felt like the main character could be a version of myself. That’s how relatable they can be.

I still have quite a few of her books to read so I’m only in the middle of this journey but I can guarantee you that the second R.S. Grey has another book published, I’m getting my grabby paws on it! So, who is with me? Who wants to take a deep dive into the world of R.S. Grey?!

The next one on my docket to read of hers, is her latest release:

I’ve spent eight years wishing I’d fall out of love with Derek Knightley. Blowing out birthday candles, chasing after shooting stars, making it rain spare change into mall fountains—every time it’s the same wish: forget about Derek.

But the day he walks back into my life, I realize there are two things time has yet to soften: my feelings for him and his chiseled jawline.

It’s infuriating that my heart still races when he walks into a room. I refuse to fall prey to old unrequited love, so I decide the less I’m around him, the better. Avoidance is key.

Unfortunately, Derek isn’t going to make it easy. As a teenager, I would have crawled on my hands and knees to attract his attention. Now I can’t seem to escape it.

I’m not sure why he’s bothering. He’s not just out of my league—he’s out of my tax bracket. As the sole heir to the Knightley Company, he’s as close to American royalty as you can get. As for me, I’m just a part-time princess at Knightley’s flagship magical theme park.

I spend my days playing make-believe, but Derek has no use for fairytales. His unwavering confidence makes it clear he thinks I’ll surrender in the end.

He’s just biding his time.Making me sweat.

His Royal Highness always gets what he wants. And he wants me.

xoxo

Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meagre clues to find him.

When West McCray—a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America—overhears Sadie's story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late.

My Thoughts

Holy crap, this book. This was a definite difficult read, but it was so amazing as well. I loved the writing style of this book. It was written half in podcast form with the voice of West McCray, who has his own serial true crime podcast. And then the other half was told in Sadie’s narrative. I really loved how this book captured the story that was being told. It was amazing and it was heartbreaking.

I really loved the fact that this story was basically a mystery within a mystery. And it was just so different from so many YA books that I’m craving more books written like this. It really fascinates me when books are told in mixed media. And it honestly made me love the book even more.

I do have to mention that there are some tough subjects within this book that can be very triggering. It’s a sad story, I’m not going to lie. But it’s a story that is so worth reading. If you can handle the triggering subject matter, I highly recommend that you read this book!

My Thoughts You guys… this book was super cute! And it totally made me rewatch A Cinderella Story (with Hillary Duff and Chad Michael Murray)! Cinderella isn’t usually my favorite retelling only because there are so many Cinderella retellings, but I get why. It’s a great plot line and easy to change up and make […]
