A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond...
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

I wanted to like this so much, but honestly it just fell flat. I stumbled upon this author when looking through books in my “recommended” page on Goodreads. Her next release, The Alchemists of Loom, instantly stopped my heart and flew to my To Read list. Upon further research, I discovered her older works from there, and here we are! The synopsis of this novel had me sold from the first sentence, and when it arrived and I cracked that spine, I was so excited!! Yet, it fell flat. The main character Valla’s internal narration felt stiff and lack luster. The cadence of events was strange, for example, large gaps of time would elapse in pages then a single day would take up chapters. I couldn’t figure out how long things took by about halfway – and that coupled with the super obvious classic they-cant-stand-eachother-sexy-try-hard-chemistry-romance, I was sorely disappointed. The magic system itself was confusing as well, it was explained in length at the beginning then not used again until it popped up randomly in the middle. I felt like the premise of the girl in the library was lost from page one, since most of the events take Valla outside of her librarian life – which I so longed to see more of. On Goodreads, this series is rated 4.0 across the board! I wanted to love it so dearly, and I left feeling like I missed the point hidden in there somewhere. I might give book two a try, though it may take a later reread of book one to get me interested again. Let me know what you think! Should I give this a re-read? Am I just missing something? Let me know down below!

Also, Emily read and reviewed this back in February and she gave it 4 stars, so check out that review too!

Fire Falling is the second book in the Air Awakens Series.

(Summary taken from Goodreads)

“Even something very small can cast a large shadow when it is close to the sun.”

“Either way, consider me your sword, Vhalla Yarl.”

“I love him, but I am only death. I am death to everyone I love. Someday I will be the death of him.”

Almost two months ago, I wrote a post for our 12 days of Christmas event here at In Wonderland. I was tasked with choosing two books with cliffhangers or endings that deserved coal. Looking back at that post, I think I have a new winner in Fire Falling. This book is the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers. Even if I hadn’t loved the book (which I really truly and completely did), I think I would still pick up the next book in the series, Earth’s End, just to know what happens.

In Fire Falling, the Vhalla Yarl’s world is back and better than ever. In this book, Vhalla grows immensely. I loved seeing her come into her own. While still not a warrior in the traditional sense, Vhalla’s willpower and ability to stand up for herself grows with every page. I was so impressed with her strength.

Speaking of characters, Fire Falling brings back all of the old favorites…and introduces some new favorites as well. Some of Aldrik’s secrets are explored, and we get to see more of the Fire Lord’s history and how he became who he is. But there’s still some pieces left undiscovered. Then there’s Larel, who continues to be the shining beacon of friendship. I adored her. One of the new characters, Daniel, is the perfect sidekick, loyal and kind. Even the horrible, cruel characters are incredibly well crafted.

As with Air Awakens, the magic in this book is amazing. I could picture what it would look like when Vhalla uses air to her advantage. I could visualize exactly what it would look like when Aldrik summons fire like it’s nothing. And we get glimpses at other forms of magic as well. Through it all, the magic gives off serious Avatar vibes, and it’s glorious.

However, what I really admired most in this book are the relationships between characters. No relationship is simple. There are complications: of personalities, of situations, and of other characters. There’s romance and passion and anger and hatred. And it’s all melded together perfectly. The relationship between Aldrik and Baldair is explored more, but there are still secrets between the brothers. Vhalla and Aldrik continue to grow and learn to trust each other. New characters wound their way into both Vhalla’s heart and mine. I can only cross my fingers and hope that all of them will survive the series.

Elise Kova has truly outdone herself with Fire Falling. The storyline is constantly swinging back and forth between “Oh no, this is bad” and “Well this all just seems too good to be true.” And it works. I was hooked from page 1 the whole way through to end. And then again at the end I was left longing for Earth’s End.

You can check out my review of Air Awakens, the first book in the series here.

Don’t forget to check out Earth’s End, the third book in the series, when it releases on February 11!

Let’s talk about it!
Have you read the Air Awakens series? If you had to choose an elemental magic, which would you pick? Leave your thoughts in the comments! 🙂
